engine risks caused by E85 or oil?

Messagede Berti le Mardi 5 Mai 2009 07:25

hi, a friend of mine contacted me and told me about his problems in his Volvo Turbo, B230FT.

after opening the engine, which died by thermic overlaod, caused by too much turbo pressure (modified), he found adhesives. These are soft, sticky and dark, just like bitumen.

the adhesives affect the injection valves, the inlet valves and the air intakes of the engine. He guess that this could be a chemical reaction between the E85 and the full synthetic oil, which is always in the intake air in very small amounts.

reflecting my chemical knowing the oil is completely soluable in E85.
he told me that he knows to other Volvo drivers, both Turbo engines, with the same phenomenon.

i do not kno if these engines are FT or low pressure FK ones, like mine......and i hope that my car is not affected by this damned stuff.

is there known something like this in any way in France? what, do you think, could be the reason for this?

okay, here are some pics

one of possible causes could be the slow destroyment of the fuel injector seal

Ok, I understand now when you writted "adhesive".
This come from engine oil who go @ turbo.
It's impossible that come from E85, because it's the most clean fuel, and your engine stay always "clean" time after time.

hi,

adhesive was the wrong word (adjective), sorry. the correct one is adhesion (subject).

do you have any idea what to do against it? if there is no way to stop that adhesions, it seems to be better not to drive on E85.

i do not know how my engine looks in the internal areas...

It will not be better to drive with fuel anyway.
Must remove and check turbo:

Must chang the yellow parts you see at pictures.
engine oil go from there to the intake manifold.

hm, you mean driving with regular fuel (SP95 or 98) will NOT reduce that adhesions? my friend told me that he used SP95 only during the winter months, but without any reducing of the adhesions

i think for me its necessay to check the intake area next spring, the change of waterpump and timing belt is needed then. (everey 5 years).

driving since october 2005 for more than 30.000km on ethanol, who knows what adhesions are in there? :eu_pray: but my car is still running without problems.
